Emergency Ungraded Option Policy – Spring 2021

A Message from Provost Osborn to the Campus Community, March 23, 2021

Dear TCNJ Students, Faculty Members, and Staff Members,

Earlier this semester, the Steering Committee charged the Committee on Academic Programs (CAP) to consider a modified Ungraded Option policy for Spring 2021. After a review of data from the past several semesters, extensive campus testimony, and research into similar policies at TCNJ’s peer institutions, CAP has recommended a temporary Ungraded Option policy for Spring 2021. I have accepted this recommendation.

Under this policy, students may choose one Spring 2021 course to appear as Ungraded on their transcripts, within certain limits and restrictions. Some courses, such as capstones and clinicals, may not be taken as Ungraded. A list of these exempted courses will be available here. In addition, if a course has certain minimum grade requirements, then students who choose the Ungraded Option will still need to meet the minimum grade if they want to use the course to meet the requirement (for example, to move to the next course in a sequence, to change majors, or to count towards a major).

As the policy notes, and as CAP emphasized in its recommendation, I strongly encourage students to discuss with their academic advisors, as soon as possible, any plans to apply the Ungraded Option to a Spring 2021 course. I also encourage students to see this FAQ page for more information about the policy.

Students may request this option by submitting an Ungraded Option Qualtrics form; the form can be found on the R&R Forms page beginning on April 1, 2021. Once the form is obtained and completed, the deadline to request an Ungraded Option is April 16, 2021.

I want to extend my sincere appreciation to all members of the Committee on Academic Programs and the Steering Committee for their work, particularly CAP chair Dr. Tracy Kress and Steering co-chair Dr. Shaun Wiley.

Best wishes for the second half of the semester.

Jeffrey M. Osborn
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
